The ODD 37×51 mm Training Practice (TP) is a purpose-built, non-explosive chalk-marking cartridge being developed for the LMT FL203 37 mm launcher. Designed with an emphasis on reliability, dimensional consistency, and repeatable performance, the 37×51 mm aims to provide a practical training ammunition solution for law enforcement, professional training organizations, and private launcher owners. **Currently in development**, the 37×51 mm is undergoing testing and evaluation prior to commercial release. Follow the project from initial concept through development, testing, and final qualification.
Purpose-Built 37 mm Training Ammunition
The ODD 37×51 mm is a training practice (TP) cartridge currently under development by ODD. Designed as a non-explosive, chalk-marking training round, the 37×51 mm program is intended to provide a consistent and practical ammunition option for 37 mm launcher operators.
Unlike many commercially available 37 mm ammunition products, the ODD 37×51 mm is being developed around a defined cartridge configuration, with emphasis on dimensional consistency, repeatable performance, and reliability.
Our objective is straightforward: develop a functional, affordable training round that meets our performance and safety standards through a documented testing and evaluation program.
The ODD 37×51 mm program utilizes modern additive manufacturing methods and engineering grade polymers to produce a purpose-built training cartridge.
The ammunition is intended for training applications where visible projectile impact identification is desirable without the use of an explosive payload.
Development and testing are being conducted using the LMT M203 37 mm launcher as the initial evaluation platform.
Launcher Compatibility
The commercial 37 mm ammunition market lacks a universally adopted dimensional standard. As a result, ammunition compatibility between manufacturers and launcher designs cannot be assumed.
The ODD 37×51 mm is being developed and evaluated for specific launcher configurations. Compatibility with other 37 mm launchers will not be represented or guaranteed without separate testing and validation.
A list of approved launcher platforms will be published following completion of the qualification program.
The ODD 37×51 mm will be offered in two package quantities:
7-Round Package — Seven training cartridges.
14-Round Package — Fourteen training cartridges.
These quantities were selected with storage and transportation in commonly available .50-caliber ammunition cans in mind.
The ODD 37×51 mm utilizes a separate launching blank.
Launching blanks are not included with the training cartridges and will not be manufactured or offered for sale by ODD.
Once the development and qualification program has been completed, ODD intends to publish the validated launching blank specifications and associated loading data.
Until those specifications are finalized and released, the ammunition should be considered developmental and not ready for operational use.
Final performance information will be published upon completion of live-fire testing and evaluation, including:
Average muzzle velocity
Effective training range
Accuracy and consistency
Approved launcher compatibility
Final ammunition configuration and specifications
All published performance data will be based on actual testing rather than theoretical calculations or unverified manufacturer claims.
Status: In Development — Not Currently Available for Sale
The ODD 37×51 mm is undergoing development and evaluation. Live-fire testing will be used to establish performance characteristics, identify potential design deficiencies, and determine whether the ammunition meets ODD's requirements for public release.
Final specifications, pricing, availability, and supporting technical documentation will be announced following successful completion of the qualification process.
Development and Release Timeline:
June 2026: Concept study of a training practice round based on the 40x46 mm M781 training practice for the 37mm family of launchers begins and is designated ODD Project T371. The goal of project T371 is a 37mm round with comparable performance to the 40mm M781 using additive manufacturing and a modern M212 propulsion system.
July 2026: Study of various additive manufacturing materials, 3D printers, and launchers begins. Several engineering grade polymers are identified as good candidates for various components based on their properties. The Flashforge Adventurer 5m Pro is selected as the 3D printer most capable of handling engineering filaments, and the Lewis Machine and Tool FL203 37mm launcher is selected as the primary development and testing platform.
August 2026: ODD takes delivery of the FL203 and precision measurements of the launcher bore are taken, CAD development begins on the cartridge components based on the bore measurements. Computer based simulations are run on the components. Based on the common 2" chamber length of 37mm launchers 51mm is selected as overall hull length, the designation changes from Project T371 to 37x51mm ODD. Launchers from different manufactures are studied and it was determined that there is too much variation in chamber and bore dimensions to make a universal 37mm cartridge. The scope of the 37x51mm is limited to compatibility with the LMT FL203 with testing in other launchers to follow at a later time.
September:2026: CAD development and computer simulations are completed, and manufacturing materials are selected. ODD takes delivery of the Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro.
October 2026: Prototype manufacturing begins with revisions to various components to enhance loading, extraction, and bore fit of the projectile.
Present Day: Launching blank load development and live fire testing are underway.
