Ordnance Development Division

The Ordnance Development Division of Freedom Forge Armory is dedicated to advancing the science, safety, and effectiveness of modern and historical mortar systems through hands-on testing, field research, and specialized instruction. Founded by veterans and operated by experienced professionals, the Division serves as a critical resource for civilian-owned destructive device holders, defense contractors, training institutions, private military contractors, and historical preservationists.

We specialize in controlled live-fire testing of mortar systems, custom charge development, and precision data collection using modern observation and digital fire control tools. Our team integrates traditional gunnery techniques with emerging technologies to provide data-driven insights into mortar ballistics, charge performance, and system limitations under realistic field conditions.

Our capabilities include:

  • Ordnance Testing & Evaluation
We conduct rigorous live-fire testing of mortar ammunition, increment charges, and tube systems. Tests are designed around real-world firing conditions, using instrumentation and observation tools to capture muzzle velocity, impact behavior, and trajectory data.

  • Mortar Gunnery Training
We operate a dedicated training program focused on safe, effective crew operations for mortar systems. Our Basic Gunnery course covers live-fire safety and crew drills, while our Advanced course trains students in fire direction procedures, charge and fuze selection, and digital fire control system integration.

  • Digital Fire Control Development (I3-FIRES)
The Ordnance Development Division is the home of the I3-FIRES program—a modular, AI-assisted fire control system built from the ground up to support mortarmen, military contractors, and non-standard users. I3-FIRES brings intuitive interfaces, real-time ballistic calculations, and integrated mission tools to the field, even in austere conditions.

  • Safety & Compliance
All activities are conducted in compliance with federal and state regulations. We operate with strict range safety protocols and risk mitigation procedures in place for every live-fire event.

  • Consultation & Support
We offer consulting services for individuals and organizations seeking guidance on mortar system acquisition, range setup, ammunition compatibility, or training program development.
